Steps to KM Formula
The formula to convert steps to kilometers is straightforward once you know your stride length:
Where stride is measured in centimeters. For meters, divide by 1,000 instead.
Quick Examples
- 5,000 steps × 75 cm = 3.75 km
- 10,000 steps × 75 cm = 7.5 km
- 15,000 steps × 75 cm = 11.25 km
How to Convert Steps to KM
Method 1: Using Average Stride
- 1 Use average stride: 75 cm (general), 70 cm (women), 78 cm (men)
- 2 Multiply your steps by stride (e.g., 10,000 × 75 = 750,000 cm)
- 3 Divide by 100,000 to get km (750,000 ÷ 100,000 = 7.5 km)
Method 2: Using Height
- 1 Calculate stride: Height (cm) × 0.415 (men) or × 0.413 (women)
- 2 Example: 170 cm × 0.413 = 70.2 cm stride
- 3 Apply the formula: (Steps × Stride) ÷ 100,000 = km
10,000 Steps: How Many Calories Burned?
Calorie burn from 10,000 steps varies based on weight, pace, and terrain. Here's a general estimate:
By Body Weight
- 120 lbs (54 kg) ~350 cal
- 150 lbs (68 kg) ~420 cal
- 180 lbs (82 kg) ~500 cal
- 200 lbs (91 kg) ~550 cal
| Weight | Calories (Slow) | Calories (Brisk) |
|---|---|---|
| 120 lbs (54 kg) | ~250 cal | ~350 cal |
| 150 lbs (68 kg) | ~300 cal | ~420 cal |
| 180 lbs (82 kg) | ~360 cal | ~500 cal |
| 205 lbs (93 kg) | ~410 cal | ~570 cal |
100 Steps per Minute to KM/H
Walking at 100 steps per minute is considered a moderate walking pace. Here's how to calculate the speed:
Cadence Reference
- Slow Walk (80 SPM) ~3.6 km/h
- Moderate (100 SPM) ~4.5 km/h
- Brisk Walk (120 SPM) ~5.4 km/h
- Power Walk (140 SPM) ~6.3 km/h
How to Count Steps in KM
Smartphone Apps
Use built-in health apps (Google Fit, Apple Health) or download step counter apps that track automatically.
Fitness Trackers
Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch, and other wearables count steps and often convert to distance automatically.
Manual Calculation
Walk a known distance, count steps, divide distance by steps to find your stride, then calculate any distance.
Steps to KM Ratio
The steps-to-kilometer ratio depends on your stride length. Here's a quick reference:
Common Ratios
Quick Estimation
For most people, a good rule of thumb is:
Or inversely: 1,000 steps ≈ 0.7-0.75 km

Steps to KM Across Different Activities
Different activities produce different step-to-km ratios. Here's how your steps translate into distance across common exercise types:
Walking
At a comfortable pace (4–5 km/h), most people average about 1,300–1,400 steps per kilometer. A 30-minute walk covers roughly 2.0–2.5 km (2,600–3,500 steps).
Jogging
Jogging at 6–8 km/h increases stride length to 80–90 cm, reducing the step count to approximately 1,100–1,250 steps per kilometer. A 30-minute jog covers 3–4 km.
Running
Running at 10+ km/h with strides of 100–130 cm means only 770–1,000 steps per kilometer. A 30-minute run covers 5+ km with fewer total steps than walking the same distance.
Hiking
Hiking on uneven terrain shortens stride length by 10–20% compared to flat walking. Expect 1,500–1,700 steps per kilometer on trails, with uphill sections requiring even more steps.
