Understanding Steps per Minute and Speed
Your walking or running speed depends on two factors: how fast you take steps (cadence) and how long each step is (stride length).
The Formula
Example: 120 SPM × 75 cm: (120 × 75 × 60) ÷ 100,000 = 5.4 km/h
What is Cadence?
Cadence is the number of steps you take per minute. Typical: Walking (100-120), Jogging (140-160), Running (160-180+).
Tips for Accurate Results
- • Measure your stride by walking 10 steps and dividing the total distance by 10
- • Your stride length increases when running compared to walking
- • Use your smartwatch cadence data for the most accurate SPM
