Understanding Steps per Minute and Speed
Your walking or running speed depends on two factors: how fast you take steps (cadence) and how long each step is (stride length). This calculator converts your steps per minute directly to kilometers per hour.
The Formula
Speed (km/h) = (SPM × Stride Length in cm × 60) ÷ 100,000
For example, 120 steps per minute with a 75 cm stride: (120 × 75 × 60) ÷ 100,000 = 5.4 km/h
What is Cadence?
Cadence is the number of steps you take per minute. Most fitness trackers and smartwatches can measure this automatically. Typical cadences are: Walking (100-120 SPM), Jogging (140-160 SPM), Running (160-180+ SPM).
Tips for Accurate Results
- • Measure your stride by walking 10 steps and dividing the total distance by 10
- • Your stride length increases when running compared to walking
